Procurement-team questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask us most often during RFQ and trial-shipment evaluation.

Pusa Sawani, Arka Anamika, or Parbhani Kranti?
Pusa Sawani is the IARI release — short, dark-green pod, traditional South Asian and Gulf market favourite. Arka Anamika is IIHR release — yellow-vein-mosaic-virus tolerant, lighter-green pod, suited to virus-pressure environments. Parbhani Kranti is Maharashtra release — high yield, slightly fuzzy pod, cheaper. F1 hybrids (Mahyco MHRH-105, Nuziveedu Pradeep) deliver 30%+ yield lift but seed cost is 4–6× OP.
What is YVMV tolerance and why does it matter?
Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus is the major okra disease in South Asia, GCC, and Africa, transmitted by whitefly. Resistant / tolerant varieties (Arka Anamika, Mahyco hybrids with YVMV gene) sustain yield under heavy whitefly pressure; susceptible varieties (older Pusa releases) lose 40–60% yield. Specify YVMV tolerance for Gulf and African deployments where whitefly is endemic.
How is okra seed treated?
Standard treatment thiram + carbendazim against fungal damping-off, plus imidacloprid (FS) against jassid / whitefly at germination stage. F1 hybrid lots ship pre-treated and pre-coloured (typically pink or blue) for visual identification. Untreated organic-track lots available on request.
What seeding rate?
6–10 kg/ha for OP varieties; 2–3 kg/ha for F1 hybrids. F1 hybrid plant populations are lower because of higher uniformity and stronger vigour. A 5 kg air-freight pack covers 1.7–2.5 ha for F1 commercial planting. Larger LCL volumes serve seed multipliers and broker channels rather than direct farmer sale.
Can you supply colour-specific okra?
Yes — red-podded varieties (Parbhani Kranti red, Burgundy) for specialty / premium retail; bright-green varieties (Arka Anamika) for mainstream Gulf retail; light-green (Pusa Sawani) for traditional cuisine. Specify pod colour on PO. Red-podded okra is a niche premium tier and sees small but firm Gulf and EU specialty-vegetable demand.
