- Open-field versus protected-cultivation tomato — different seed?
- Yes. Open-field varieties (Pusa Ruby, Roma, Arka Saurabh) are determinate — bush habit, finite fruit set, 65–75 day cycle. Protected-cultivation indeterminate F1 hybrids (most Dutch / Israeli releases) keep growing and fruiting for 6–10 months under polyhouse / glasshouse conditions. Specify cultivation type; mis-matching variety to environment is the most common Gulf protected-ag buyer complaint.
- What disease tolerances should I specify?
- For Gulf / GCC protected cultivation specify: ToMV (tomato mosaic virus), TSWV (tomato spotted wilt), TYLCV (tomato yellow leaf curl, whitefly-borne), Fusarium oxysporum races 1+2+3, Verticillium dahliae, root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita / javanica). The TY-prefix breeders' code on commercial F1 hybrids indicates TYLCV resistance — essential for Gulf / Sub-Saharan whitefly pressure.
- Determinate, semi-determinate, or indeterminate?
- Determinate: bush habit, finite fruit set, mechanical-harvest processing tomato. Semi-determinate: medium habit, 2–3 trusses then auto-stop — good for short-cycle open field. Indeterminate: vine habit, continuous fruit set, 6–10 month protected cultivation. Choose by labour model and cultivation infrastructure; specify clearly on PO.
- How are tomato seeds packed for air-freight?
- Foil pouches inside cartons with desiccant, palletised at airport-warehouse temperature 18–22 °C, RH < 50%. Avoid temperature spikes during ground transit — we use refrigerated road transport from origin processor to airport. Tomato seed germination drops 3–5% per month at sustained 30 °C+ exposure, so plan air-freight transit windows carefully in summer.
- Can you supply heirloom / specialty seed?
- Yes — Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Mortgage Lifter, San Marzano, Black Krim, and other heirloom varieties for restaurant-specialty and premium-retail growers. Origin is principally USA-Pacific Northwest seed-savers and Italian small breeders. MOQ small (50 g+); pricing is 5–20× commercial F1 because of low-volume hand-grown seed crop.
