Berseem clover seed origins: Egypt Delta, Pakistan Sindh, Indian Punjab

Certified Egyptian berseem is multiplied in Sharqia, Beheira, and Kafr El-Sheikh governorates and loads at Alexandria or Damietta. Saudi and Emirati dairy pivots specify Egyptian Mescavi. Sudanese and Yemeni hay growers ask for single-cut Saidi. Price-led programmes in Kenya, Iraq, and Central Asia take re-multiplied Sindh or Indian Punjab lots consolidated at Jebel Ali.

Mescavi, Saidi, Fahl, Bigbee: berseem cultivar names on certificates

Egyptian certificates spell the multi-cut type Mescavi, Meskawi, or Miskawi; all refer to the same basally branching variety. Saidi and Balady are the single-cut Upper Egypt and landrace types with apical branching. Fahl is the winter-cover type. Bigbee and Frosty are Mississippi and cold-tolerant United States releases; Sonora is the Mediterranean multi-cut line.

Berseem COA language: purity, germination, moisture, weed seed declarations

An Egyptian berseem COA lists variety by name, purity at 98 to 99 percent, germination at 85 percent minimum on a seven-day count, and 9 to 11 percent moisture. Weed seed is itemised: Cuscuta, Striga, Sinapis arvensis, and Avena fatua declared absent. The ISTA date falls within 90 days of production, not shipment.

Berseem use cases: pivot dairies, rice-fallow cover, feedlot green chop

Saudi and Emirati pivot dairies run Mescavi from October to April for four to six green-chop cuts. Pakistani Sindh and Indian Punjab growers sow berseem into rice fallow for nitrogen and winter fodder. Iraqi feedlots in Diyala and Najaf chop it for beef finishing. Sudanese hay traders bale Saidi for Khartoum markets.

Berseem shipping routes: Alexandria to Jebel Ali to Jeddah, Mombasa

Egyptian berseem sails Alexandria or Damietta to Jebel Ali in 8 to 12 days via Suez. Direct Alexandria to Jeddah runs 12 to 18 days, to Mombasa 20 to 28 days. Transhipment at Jebel Ali takes 24 to 72 hours, then Umm Qasr is 4 to 6 days and Dammam 7 to 10 days.

Berseem clover pricing structure: FOB Damietta versus CFR Jeddah

Berseem is quoted against an RFQ as FOB Damietta, FOB Jebel Ali, CFR, or CIF destination. Price moves on variety (Mescavi above Saidi and Balady), purity above 99.5 percent, current-crop versus carryover after May-to-July harvest, and container count per programme. Gulf buyers negotiate CFR Jeddah or Dammam with 30 to 60 day validity.

Berseem quality assurance: field traceability, dodder certificate, loading

The lot number traces to named fields in Sharqia or Beheira, and the dodder-free certificate names the cleaning facility. A 1 to 2 kilogram sample goes for buyer germination testing. After approval the proforma opens against LC at sight, and container stuffing at Alexandria or Jebel Ali is photographed with seal numbers recorded.

Berseem container math: 20-foot FCL, 40-foot HC, mixed-variety loads

A 20-foot FCL carries 22 to 24 metric tonnes of berseem in 25 kilogram PP bags, or 20 tonnes in 50 kilogram jute. A 40-foot high-cube reaches 26 to 27 tonnes. Mescavi, Balady, and Fahl share one container and bill of lading. FIBC bulk bags suit pivot dairies; LCL trials start at 1,000 kilograms.

Berseem import compliance: Saudi MEWA, Kenya KEPHIS, Pakistan DPP

Saudi Arabia requires a MEWA seed-import permit and rejects any berseem lot lacking a dodder-free certificate, whatever the purity figure. Kenya issues a KEPHIS plant import permit and tests germination at Mombasa. Pakistan's Department of Plant Protection inspects at Karachi and requires an Egyptian phytosanitary certificate plus fumigation.

Questions des équipes achats

Réponses aux questions les plus fréquentes posées par les acheteurs lors d'un RFQ ou d'une évaluation d'expédition d'essai.

What is the difference between Mescavi, Balady and Fahl berseem?
Mescavi is the premium multi-cut Egyptian variety — 4 to 5 cuts per season, finest stem, best dairy hay. Balady is a single-cut local landrace, lower yield but cheap and proven for cover-cropping rice fallow. Fahl is winter-cover only, cheapest, no significant biomass cut. Most GCC dairy buyers specify 100% Mescavi; African and South Asian rice-fallow programmes typically take 60% Mescavi / 40% Balady mix.
Why route Egyptian berseem through Jebel Ali instead of direct?
Routing Alexandria → Jebel Ali → final destination consolidates documentation under one BL, opens a single LC instead of multiple, and lets buyers in Pakistan, Iraq, East Africa or Central Asia layer multiple variety lots into one shipment. The Jebel Ali Free Zone status also resets the Certificate of Origin and gives GSP / FTA access into markets where direct Egyptian shipments don't qualify.
Is the seed treated against dodder?
Yes — every Egyptian Mescavi lot ships ISTA-tested dodder-free with the origin Phytosanitary Certificate explicitly stating Cuscuta absence. Re-multiplied Pakistani / Indian lots are screened at origin and re-cleaned at Jebel Ali if any dodder seed is detected. We reject any lot exceeding 0.05% dodder content.
What is the typical sowing rate and how does it affect MOQ planning?
20–25 kg per hectare for Mescavi pure-stand; 15–18 kg/ha when intercropped with oats. A 22 MT FCL covers roughly 1,000 hectares of pure stand. Buyers sizing programmes for 5,000 ha plant 110–120 MT split across 5 FCLs, ideally consolidated at Jebel Ali to phase against monthly sowing windows.
Can you ship to Iraq via Umm Qasr?
Yes — direct from Jebel Ali to Umm Qasr is 4–6 days transit, with all docs routed via Dubai Chamber. Iraqi feed mills and dairy farms in Diyala and Najaf typically take 2–3 FCLs per season, October to early December. We handle Iraqi customs pre-clearance through our agent network and provide Arabic-language CoO and packing list on request.
