Procurement-team questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask us most often during RFQ and trial-shipment evaluation.

BMR 6, BMR 12, or BMR 18 — what is the difference?
BMR (Brown Midrib) refers to a recessive gene reducing lignin content. BMR 6 is the most widely deployed mutation — strong digestibility lift, slight lodging trade-off. BMR 12 is similar lift, better stalk strength, preferred for chopping. BMR 18 is the newest stack — highest digestibility, bred for dairy programmes wanting maximum milk-per-acre on summer-annual forage. We carry all three from US and Australian breeders.
How does prussic-acid / cyanide risk affect grazing?
Sorghum-sudan hybrids accumulate dhurrin which converts to prussic acid (HCN) under stress (drought, frost, regrowth < 45 cm). Never graze stands shorter than 60 cm. Photoperiod-sensitive (PPS) varieties from Texas A&M lines flower late and stay vegetative longer, reducing the grazing risk window. We supply variety-specific HCN guidance per shipment.
What is a typical seeding rate?
20–30 kg per hectare for grazing or hay; 12–18 kg/ha for dryland cropping. A 22 MT FCL covers 730–1,100 ha at the higher rate. For Saudi central pivots specify 25–30 kg/ha; for Sudanese / Pakistani dryland 12–15 kg/ha. We pre-treat all dispatch lots with thiram + apron against pythium.
Can sorghum-sudan be sown in saline soil?
Sorghum-sudan tolerates moderate salinity (up to ECe 6 dS/m) better than alfalfa or clover. Saudi central-pivot operators with rising salinity often rotate to sorghum-sudan in summer between alfalfa cycles. For high-salinity ground (> 8 dS/m) we recommend the Italian / Greek halophyte forage lines instead.
How long from PO to FOB?
Pakistani / Indian conventional lots dispatch in 14–18 days from PO. USA / Australian BMR lots run 28–42 days because of variety-specific treatment processing and AOSCA tagging. We confirm vessel ETD inside 48 hours of PO and hold 10 MT BMR 6 safety stock at Jebel Ali for spot shipments.
