Sowing grade versus food grade versus sprouting grade — what changes?

Sowing grade ships under HS 1209.91 with an ISTA certificate showing purity of 99% and germination of at least 85%; buyers are seed multipliers and commercial growers. Food or halim grade ships under HS 1207.99, is Sortex-cleaned to 99% with admixture under 1%, and carries a pesticide-residue panel because it is eaten. Sprouting grade is food grade plus a microbiological panel — Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria absent in 25 g — because microgreens are consumed raw. Specify the grade on the PO; the HS code drives duty and inspection at destination.

Where is the demand for halim / حب الرشاد seed?

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are the largest Gulf buyers: حب الرشاد is a traditional food used in post-partum nutrition and winter dishes, packed in 100–500 g retail units by spice houses in Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuwait City. India consumes halim and aliv seed in laddoo, kheer and Maharashtrian sweets, with Mumbai and Pune packers buying Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh lots. European microgreen growers in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK buy sprouting grade for cress punnets. Egypt and Morocco supply regional culinary markets and export surplus.

What purity and germination should I specify for sowing lots?

Specify purity of 99% minimum, germination of 85% or higher tested to ISTA rules, moisture under 8%, and weed seed nil for Lepidium sativum sowing lots. Garden cress germinates within 24–48 hours, so germination drops quickly if seed is stored warm; ask for a test date within 90 days of shipment. Bold red-brown seed from Rajasthan and Punjab is preferred by growers for vigour, while smaller Egyptian seed suits dense microgreen sowing. We provide the ISTA certificate and origin phytosanitary certificate with every sowing-grade container.

Can you supply sprouting-grade cress with a microbial COA?

Yes. Sprouting and microgreen grade cress is drawn from food-grade lots, machine cleaned, then tested at an accredited origin lab for Salmonella (absent in 25 g), E. coli O157:H7 and Listeria, with total plate count reported. Lots are packed in 25 kg PP bags with food-grade liners and kept below 8% moisture. Because cress seed is mucilaginous when wet, sprouting buyers usually sow on mats or paper rather than in jars; we can supply germination data at 20 °C on request. Minimum order for sprouting grade is 500 kg LCL.

How much cress seed fits in a container and what is the lead time?

A 20-foot container loads 18–20 MT in 25 kg PP bags or about 19 MT in 50 kg jute bags; 1 kg retail pouches are packed in 20 kg cartons and reduce capacity to roughly 15 MT. Lead time is 14–21 days from confirmed PO, loading at Mundra or Karachi for Indian and Pakistani origin and Alexandria for Egyptian lots, with Gulf transit of 5–8 days to Jeddah or Dammam and 21–28 days to Hamburg. LCL trial lots of 500 kg consolidate through Jebel Ali.
