Pinus gerardiana cones are hand-collected in the Suleiman Range around Sherani and Zhob, in Chitral and South Waziristan, and in Afghan Paktia, Khost, and Nangarhar. Gulf dry-fruit packers and Chinese wholesalers take Pakistani in-shell through Karachi. Diaspora retailers in United Kingdom and Canada buy kernel. Italian pinea and Korean koraiensis serve pesto and confectionery buyers.
Chilgoza grades decoded: in-shell, kernel, hand-sorted, sortex, roasted
Grading runs by format, then sortation. In-shell nuts are long, thin, and pointed, with kernel yield of 35 to 40 percent. Kernel is sold white (blanched) or natural with testa. Hand-sorted grade holds broken kernels, hulls, and discolouration under 0.5 percent; sortex suits private-label retail; unsorted bulk goes to processors. Roasted kernel ships nitrogen-flushed.
COA specification for chilgoza: moisture, aflatoxin, yield, peroxide value
The COA names Pinus gerardiana, the collection district, and harvest year. Moisture reads below 6 percent for kernel and 8 percent for in-shell. Aflatoxin B1 reads under 2 micrograms per kilogram and total under 4, per EC 1881/2006. Kernel lots add peroxide value, free fatty acid, Salmonella absence in 25 grams, and foreign matter.

Chilgoza is quoted against an RFQ as FOB Karachi, FOB Jebel Ali, CFR, or CIF destination. Price moves on harvest year in the biennial cone cycle, format and sortation grade, Pakistani versus Afghan chain of custody, aflatoxin results, and carton count. Annual contracts fixed in January after the October-to-December harvest price below March spot.
Chilgoza quality assurance: cupping sample, aflatoxin lab, sealed loading
A 1 to 2 kilogram sample ships with a draft COA, enough for a roast and cupping test. The buyer commissions aflatoxin at SGS Pakistan, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek. Kernel shape is photographed against a gerardiana reference. After approval, the proforma opens against LC at sight or TT and stuffing is photographed.
Chilgoza container math: high value, low volume per 20-foot FCL
A 20-foot FCL carries 12 to 18 metric tonnes of in-shell chilgoza in 25 kilogram cartons but 8 to 14 tonnes of kernel in 10 kilogram vacuum cartons. Because one container represents a six-figure invoice, most buyers move 500 kilograms to 2 tonnes LCL; programme buyers fill 20-foot boxes and rarely a 40-foot high-cube.
Chilgoza import compliance: EU CHED-D, Saudi SFDA, US FDA, Korea MFDS
EU consignments enter under HS 0802.92 with a CHED-D on TRACES, aflatoxin per EC 1881/2006, and a fumigation certificate; Border Control Posts sample 8 to 12 percent. - Pakistani chilgoza (Pinus gerardiana) is hand-harvested from wild Suleiman Range / Chitral / Gilgit forests — slow growth (7–8 year cone cycle), narrow seasonal harvest, intense labour. Italian pinea (Pinus pinea) is plantation-grown, longer kernel, less intense flavour. Korean koraiensis is the global volume tier — plantation, bulk pricing. Pakistani / Afghan chilgoza commands the premium because of hand-harvest scarcity and distinctive sweet flavour.
- In-shell or kernel — what should I specify?
- In-shell chilgoza ships at lower cost per gram of nut (about 35–40% kernel-by-weight) but buyers must run de-shelling — often manually because chilgoza shells are too brittle for standard pine-nut crackers. Kernel ships ready for retail / confectionery use, premium 2.5–3× in-shell because of de-shelling labour and yield loss. Most Gulf retail buyers want kernel; some traditional GCC buyers prefer in-shell for crack-and-eat retail.
- Are there pine-nut syndrome / dysgeusia concerns?
- Pine-nut syndrome (metallic bitter taste lasting days after consumption) was historically associated with Pinus armandii from China. Pakistani Pinus gerardiana, Italian Pinus pinea, and Korean Pinus koraiensis have no documented syndrome incidence. We do not source Pinus armandii. Every shipment carries a species-of-origin declaration to confirm trader / retailer expectations.
- How do you handle aflatoxin and microbial spec?
- Pine nuts have low but documented aflatoxin incidence (especially during humid storage). Every export-bound lot tests aflatoxin (B1 + total) per EU 1881/2006, Salmonella absent in 25 g, total plate count < 10,000 cfu / g. Vacuum-sealed packaging with oxygen-absorber inside cartons keeps shelf-life > 12 months at room temperature. Refrigerated transit recommended for long-haul.
- Why do chilgoza prices spike during certain years?
- Pinus gerardiana cones mature on a 2-year cycle, with one strong harvest year and one weak year. Civil-conflict pressure in Suleiman Range (Pakistani / Afghan tribal belt) periodically interrupts harvest logistics. Combined effect: buyers see 30–60% spot-price swings year-over-year.
